Living Wide: Reclaiming the Second Half of Life
The second half of life demands a different kind of discernment. Not the kind that builds careers or balances ambition, but the kind that confronts what success has failed to resolve. By midlife, many high-functioning adults find themselves living inside narratives that no longer fit.
To live wide is to stop managing the arc and start reauthoring it. This isn’t about reinvention for its own sake. It’s about reclaiming the life that wants to be lived now. It’s the shift from an ethic of achievement to an ethic of amplitude.

The arrival of midlife
Midlife rarely announces itself with drama. More often, it enters like a subtle erosion, an accumulating sense that something vital has quietly slipped out of reach. Even high-functioning adults, those with carefully curated lives and visible markers of success, can find themselves unable to locate the desires that once drove them. In some cases, they’re not just unsure of what they want next, they can’t remember what they used to want.
This disorientation isn’t pathological. It’s not even exceptional. In fact, it’s a developmental inevitability, though our culture has no rite or roadmap for it.
During the first half of life, the imperative is clear: grow up! Construct a functional ego, master the codes of your culture, accumulate capital - symbolic, social, and financial. You learn to belong, to specialize, to perform. You become someone. If you succeed, the payoff is a stable, legible identity, a self that others can recognize, and that you can rely on to navigate the social world.
But that self, useful as it may be, is partial, provisional. It is a temporary scaffold, and Midlife is when the scaffolding starts to creak. The identity that once felt like solid ground begins to show its seams. Roles ossify. The rewards of performance dull. The future stops feeling like an obvious extension of the past. You begin to suspect that the person you’ve spent decades becoming is not the whole story - but you don’t yet know how to tell another one.
When the Story Isn’t Yours Anymore
What you call stagnation is often something deeper: the quiet recognition that you’re living inside a story you might not have consciously authored. That story may still function. It may look admirable from the outside. But inside, something vital is missing. It no longer feels lived, it feels maintained, based on old scripts shaped by family, culture, and the survival strategies you adopted long before you could choose them. They’re not wrong, but they are no longer yours.
This is not dysfunction. This is the beginning of authorship. This is asking, perhaps for the first time: Whose story is this?
The "Ethics of Amplitude"
Our culture prizes longevity, optimization, and self-preservation. But what if the deeper imperative is not to live longer, not to collect "successes", but to live wider, in what I call an "ethics of amplitude": the idea that a meaningful life is defined by how fully it is inhabited.
To live with amplitude is to orient not around survival, but around significance. It means privileging meaning over metrics, and choosing presence over permanence. A wide life isn’t maximized, it’s authored. It carries the texture of desire, the complexity of contradiction, and the courage to be reshaped by time rather than simply extended through it. In this context Midlife is not collapse. It’s exposure. And with that comes the pivotal question: Who now, apart from roles and history, do I choose to become in the second half of my adult life?
Why FM Transformational Coaching™ is Different
The ethics of amplitude isn’t a metaphor. It’s the foundation of this work. FM Transformational Coaching™ is not built for performative breakthroughs or weekend epiphanies. It’s not a sanctuary for vague affirmations, spiritual outsourcing, or the endless pursuit of optimization.
Instead, we work at the level where identity is structured: how you explain yourself to yourself. Together, we investigate which parts of that story were inherited, which were adaptive, and which are quietly asking to be dismantled or rewritten.
What you’ll find here is not ideology, but method. FM Transformational Coaching™ draws from depth psychology, narrative theory, symbolic systems, and neuroscience, not as decoration, but as integrated tools for reauthoring a life with coherence and agency.
At the center is the proprietary FM ROADMAP™, a structured, seven-step framework designed to help you exit the ghostwritten story and begin living one you’ve deliberately composed.

To live wide is to abandon the illusion of linear progress and embrace the improvisational nature of becoming, where meaning isn’t accumulated like milestones, but inhabited moment by moment.
"Life as a journey" is a well-worn cliché. It fits neatly with the early stages: childhood’s structured milestones, the careful choreography of family, the deliberate pacing of education and career. But as life unfolds, another metaphor feels more truthful: life as a dance. A dance has rhythm but no fixed route. It demands presence, responsiveness, and the courage to move even when the next step is uncertain.
Approaching life as an unfolding dance in a playful universe, its richness lies not in retracing a distant past or reaching some imagined future, but in inhabiting the movement itself.
Change, from this perspective, isn’t an interruption of life’s trajectory. It is the choreography, the flow and counterflow, the turns and pauses, always shifting, always evolving.
Yet even seasoned dancers lose their footing. The transitions that hold the greatest potential for growth often bring disorientation and resistance. Success isn’t guaranteed. Hard work, however relentless, no longer ensures wellness or fulfillment. In those moments, willpower alone isn’t enough. You need a new strategy, and a new story.
